Leisure activities - excursion tips:

Olympia - 60 km

Olympia was once the most important venue for the ancient Olympic Games. The sanctuary served primarily as a place of worship and was the spiritual and social center of Greece.
776 BC The first sports competitions were held here. The traces of the first settlement lead to the 3rd to 4th century BC. BC back. Even today the Olympic Games take place every four years in different places around the world.
The Olympia complex is very extensive and we recommend planning a whole day to explore the excavation site and the archaeological museum. The individual components of the system are explained on information boards.
The Olympic Stadium, which is over 200 meters long, is particularly worth seeing. With a small sprint across the track, you become an athlete even for a brief moment.

Messene - 43 km

Messene was once the ancient capital of the Messenia region of the same name. The Greek polis (city) was founded in 369 BC. Built by the Theban general Epaminondas after the victory over Sparta.

The terrain below the Ithome mountain is very extensive. We recommend avoiding the midday heat as there is hardly any shade on the excavation area. The remains have been very well reconstructed, so you get an optimal idea of the entire complex.

Today the area at the foot of the 798 meter high Ithome Mountain is considered to be one of the most extensive archaeological sites in Greece. Thanks to generous private donations, Messene has become a true showcase excavation site, which is worth seeing and tangible even for non-historians.

Pylos and Methoni - 65 km

The pretty little town of Pylos is busy. Around the harbor square with its large plane trees there are cafes and taverns. When cruise ships dock in the sheltered bay in front of Pylos, a larger number of visitors can be expected. In addition, some hotels and resorts have been built around Pylos in recent years, so that the place is very touristy.

It is a little more tranquil in southern Methoni. The Venetian fortress of Methoni is worth seeing. The mighty complex was a popular defense object over the years. At the end of the complex there is a small lighthouse from Ottoman times, which has become an icon of the entire Peloponnese region.

Voidokilia Beach - 55km

One of the most beautiful Peloponnese highlights and definitely a must-see is Voidokilia Beach near Pylos. The ox-belly bay is a dream beach and especially in spring you usually have the jewel to yourself.

Marathopoli - 40 km

With its even, straight streets, which are crossed by the cross streets at an angle of exactly 90 degrees, Marathopoli looks like it was designed on the drawing board. Nevertheless, the village in the center has a lot of atmosphere. Marathopoli is known in the region as the place where you can eat good fish.

Koroni - 106 km

The small village with its whitewashed houses is picturesquely situated on a slope by the sea. Koroni is alive and exudes an authentic charm. The children play on the platia, the kafenia are well attended by the locals.
There are many shops and cozy taverns to stop off at on the promenade. When the view is clear, the mighty Taygetos Mountains rise up behind the sea and you can look over to Mani.

Neda Waterfalls - 30 km

The Neda Waterfalls are a picturesque place that is home to numerous species of flora and fauna. The waterfall called "White Water" is the starting point for a hike that leads through the gorge and follows the course of the Neda River.

You can go down by car on the renewed asphalt road near the town of Platania at the striking Barbaleka tower, on the subsequent gravel road a few hundred meters further to a large (park) square. From there it is only a 15 minute walk (sturdy shoes + drinking water advisable!) Down to the old, arched Neda bridge, after another 5 minutes you are at the top of the first and only a few minutes later the small chapel or the second, even more impressive waterfall.
The 30 km journey is very winding and therefore takes about 1 hour!
